Understanding Feelings of Unworthiness: How to Practice Self Acceptance

Unworthiness is a topic that we talk about a lot in the Hungry for Happiness community. So many of us feel like we don’t deserve to be happy, or have the job of our dreams, or be in a relationship that makes us feel honored and loved.
So we settle. We suppress our truth and what we really want. We live our lives in pain, and often times, we try numbing that pain with binge eating, alcohol, shopping, sex, etc.
But here’s the thing…
You are worthy.
Just because.
And I’m going to outline how you can start to practice self-acceptance and feel into your own innate worth.
First thing’s first: you need to accept what is.
If you’re feeling unworthy, it doesn’t make sense to try and fix the feeling. You need to acknowledge it. Feel your unworthiness fully. Don’t run away from it. Don’t suppress it through food. Don’t buy every self-help book under the sun. Acceptance and worthiness aren’t things you can find in the external world. You find them within yourself.
Accepting your unworthiness does not equal complacency. It doesn’t mean you like or love feeling this way. It just means you are being honest with where you are right now. You can’t change what you don’t accept. Instead, accept what is and have a clear vision of where you want to go from there.
Next, you need to get curious.
Curiosity is one of the most beautiful things to experience on your spiritual and personal development journey. So get curious about your pain and unworthiness. Ask yourself:
“Why is this in my body right now?”
“Why am I so in denial?”
“Why am I fighting myself?”
“Why do I feel unworthy?”
True transformation happens at the intersection of being introspective and being kind.
You can’t fight your way out of feeling unworthy, instead accept it and explore it with kindness and love.
Finally, choose how you want to feel.
You’re probably used to suppressing the feeling of unworthiness and hardly ever spend enough time thinking about how you want to feel. Really stop and reflect on that. Choose a feeling, and be clear and focused on how you want to feel in your body.
Remember, this work isn’t about seeking or doing things in the external world, it’s about choosing how you want to feel inside, every single day.
Do you want to feel peaceful? Liberated? Free? Happy? What resonates with you?
As a little ninja trick to help you with this work, here’s the thing that I do everyday to really honor where I’m at and focus on where I want to be: I act as if.
Accept where you are right not while still acting as if you feel totally worthy every single day. You’ve heard of the ole “fake it till you make it” method, right? It may seem silly, but it absolutely works. Your mind literally cannot tell the difference between you genuinely feeling a certain way or imagining that you feel a certain way.
So if you felt worthy – how would it change your life? How would you view yourself? What would you wear? What would you eat? Where would you go? How would you feel?
You are innately worthy, just because. You don’t need to do anything to be worthy. This isn’t about “getting there” – to worthiness – it’s about accepting where you are, getting curious about the false beliefs and stories that are holding you back, and letting go of everything that isn’t serving you so that you can uncover your authentic truth.
When you are truly connected to your truth, that is where you will feel your innate worthiness.
